A group of young Russians recently modified a full-size car to control it remotely via iPad. As remote controlled cars go, this ranks among one of the most impressive, particularly since the group developed an app to control everything from the steering and acceleration to the brakes.
For many of us, such a solution will be well out of our grasp, both financially and technically, although the app used is now available for free online. Instead, it may be best to work up to using such a large-scale RC car by personalising and modifying much smaller electric radio controlled cars.
There will be many smaller cars available online at very low prices, and getting the hang of how to get the most out of these and how to modify controls to allow you to achieve more will give you a much better idea of how to do the same should you ever decide you have the time and money to turn a real car into a remote controlled one.
For others, simply seeing this piece of engineering for themselves will be enough, and unless you fancy a trip to Russia, the best way to see it for yourself will be to watch video footage online.
In the meantime, there will be electric RC cars on sale of all shapes and sizes, and even those who want something a little heftier to play with may well find what they are looking for online without having to buy a real car or learning how to use obscure Russian apps.
