One of the leading automobile giants globally, Honda Motor Co. Ltd. is now in the forefront in India as well. A veritable force to reckon with among competition, the Honda brand has a large fan following and user base both worldwide as well as in India.
Honda cars India, the subsidiary entered the country in 1995 in a joint venture before becoming a fully owned unit. Besides the stellar brand recognition that the Japanese giant enjoyed, the models that it introduced in India were the tried and tested ones that ruled in existing overseas markets.
The Honda City was their first offering that debuted in India in 1998. It was a hugely successful model that saw consistently good sales. It also saw regular revamps with each successive ‘generation’ bringing both styling and technology up to date with user demands. Other models followed like the luxury sedan, the Accord, and the uber stylish Civic. While their SUV offering like the CRV did not do particularly well, the hatchbacks like the Jazz and Brio were slightly better off.
However, they stepped up the game and introduced their trump cards soon after. In 2014, Honda released the City in the diesel variant and also launched a new model, the Amaze, a budget sedan. For a nation that was obsessed with the concept of value for money, the idea of a premier brand offering a diesel variant on a proven model helped to sell the diesel City. For a company that had failed to make a dent in that growing section of car buyers that would rather buy a diesel car, this was an important move. Likewise, the Amaze rode on the preference of Indian auto users to stretch to own a sedan as against a hatchback. The new offering, shrewdly reduced in size only so much to get the pricing down, was embraced by that segment of buyers who were happy to shell out a little more to be seen in a sedan from a brand like Honda. Both did exceedingly well and served the purpose of staving off the stiff competition that the company was fighting their rivals like Hyundai, Maruti, Ford and Toyota, among others. This, coupled with their strong brand presence and the service network, did well to reestablish the edge they had been enjoying all along.
Honda cars could well continue to make waves in the Indian auto market.
